On the MacBook Pro, the TextEdit appllication’s default text format is set for rich text. This page describes how to change the default text format from Rich Text to Plain Text.

First, go to the Dock and open the TEXTEDIT application

Next, Select Preferences on the TEXTEDIT drop down Menu from the Menu Bar at the top of your screen

The last step is to.select the Plain Text option from the Format section of the Preferences, and then close the Preferences Box.
